PINELLAS COUNTY - Deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department "DUI Wolf-Pack" released results from the weekend's "You Drink and Drive. You Lose" campaign.
Deputies from the Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit, and K-9 Unit, were looking for alcohol and drug impaired drivers. Deputies were looking for other traffic violations including: speeding, aggressive driving, seat belt, driver license, registration and insurance, and equipment violations.
Deputies issued 60 citations and made 22 arrests over the weekend during the operation that began with a briefing at 8 p.m. Friday and continued until 4 a.m. Saturday. Eight DUI arrests were made and eight DUI citations were written.
Three arrests were made for suspended driver's license; two for no driver's license; five for warrants and four for drugs. Eight citations were issued for driving with a suspended or revoked license and five for speeding.
The countywide DUI Enforcement detail took place in conjunction with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration DUI Sustained Enforcement Program - "You Drink and Drive. You Lose."
The goal of the DUI Sustained Enforcement Program is to mobilize every law enforcement agency in the state in a continuing effort to keep families safe from one of the greatest threats to our communities - the impaired driver.
Statistics show that in 2004 there were 1,610 alcohol related crashes in Pinellas County. Those crashes resulted in 1,193 injuries and 48 fatalities.
In addition to this " Wolf Pack", the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will be conducting "Saturation Patrols" during the month of January in conjunction with the Sustained Enforcement Program.
