TREASURE ISLAND – The trickling sound of a new fountain at the entrance of the Treasure Island Ocean Club is among the many upgrades the 52-room beach hotel has done in the past six months.

The property, located at 11500 Gulf Blvd. and formerly operated as Trails End Resort Motel, has taken on a new look under new ownership with completely refurbished rooms and surroundings.

“We’re glad it’s done and now we’re focusing on the accommodations and hospitality side of the business,” said General Manager Gene Taafe.

The hotel was purchased in June by Clearwater-based Sette McCarthy Hotels. Since then, the property has received upgraded aesthetics outside, along with all new fixtures in each room. In addition to new paint and carpet, each room received a new 32-inch HDTV, coffeemaker, refrigerator, microwave and new bedding.

Additional plans call for a “refreshment hut” outside near the Beach Trail, a workout facility, a refurbished shuffleboard court and a beach volleyball area near the trail.

Rooms start at $89 in season and $79 out of season.

“A lot of our former customers (when it was Trail’s End) went to other motels along the beach but are slowly coming back,” said Taafe. “We’re not a Ritz-Carlton, but we’re an updated beach hotel. People want the old Florida feel and that’s what we offer.”

Taafe said he expects 70 percent to 80 percent occupancy during this year’s season from mid-January to late May.

The hotel is a member of both the Treasure Island and Madeira Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce.
