Spotlight on Weekend Entertainment

PINELLAS COUNTY – Earth Day celebrations at Honeymoon Island, the first Fun ‘N Sun concert, a home and patio show, theater, new movies and more highlight this weekend’s entertainment offerings.

For people who love jazz music, this weekend’s WSJT Smooth Jazz Fest on Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19, at Coachman Park, 301 Drew St., is a must-see. Gates open at 4 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Two-day general admission is $15 in advance for both days, $20 day of show. Two-day reserved seating is $30 in advance, $35 day of show. This year’s lineup will feature Allon Sams, Jonathan Butler and Boney James on Friday; and Bobby G. Summers, Chieli Minucci, Paul Taylor and Kem on Saturday.

Nature aficionados will want to make it out to Honeymoon Island State Park for Island Earth Days 2008, April 19-20. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers promise plenty of family-fun, including food and drink, live music suitable for a variety of tastes, eco-friendly craft vendors, guided nature walks, interactive nature exhibits and more.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute is hosting MarineQuest 2008 on Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Institute 100 Eight Ave. S.E., St. Petersburg. Admission is free. Visitors of all ages can experience science firsthand at the annual FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute open house. Handle live animals in the touch tank, interact with some of Florida’s top scientists, explore fish and wildlife research, create fish prints at the “Gyotaku” station and more. Spotlight on music

As the temperatures warm up, so does the line up of musical entertainment around Tampa Bay.

On tap for this weekend are the following:

Avril Lavigne and special guests Boys Like Girls bring 'The Best Damn Tour' to the Ford Amphitheatre on Saturday, April 19, 7 p.m.

The AP Tour featuring The Matches, Sonny, Forever the Sickest Kids, All Time Low and The Rocket Summer; Sunday, April 20, 7 p.m. at Jannus Landing.

Earth, Wind & Fire performs Sunday, April 20, 7 p.m., at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

The music doesn’t end on Sunday. One of the biggest shows of the season: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is coming to the St. Pete Times Forum, Tuesday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. This tour is the first full scale tour of the United States and Europe for Springsteen and the E Street Band since 2002-03.

The Tampa show had originally been scheduled for Monday, April 21. Springsteen announced on Friday that the tour's Florida shows had been rescheduled due to the death of original E-Street Band Keyboardist Danny Federici.

Spotlight on theater

The Francis Wilson Playhouse, 302 Seminole St, Clearwater, presents the fun and funny comedy, "The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker," Thursday through Sunday, April 16-27.

American Stage Theatre Company’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s hit musical comedy “The Pirates of Penzance” continues through May 4, at Demens Landing Park, on the corner of First Avenue North and Bayshore Boulevard.

Ray Cooney’s “Run For Your Wife” is playing through April 20 at Ed Fletcher’s Early Bird Dinner Theatre, 200 S. McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater.

The Largo High School Fine Arts Department will present its spring musical, “Guys and Dolls,” on Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, 7:30 p.m., at the school auditorium, 410 Missouri Ave. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door. Call Debbie Wortock at 588-3758.

The performing troupe at Clearwater Christian College will present William Shakespeare’s comedy “Love’s Labour’s Lost” from Wednesday through Saturday, April 16 through 19, at the college, 3400 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd. Performances will be Wednesday, 10 a.m., and Thursday through Saturday, 7 p.m. Four young men make a pact to give up love and devote themselves to study and four women frustrate that plan.
