Beach food pantry hopes for repeat generosity

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Not only will postal workers be delivering mail on their usual rounds this Saturday, May 10, they also will be collecting donated food for the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service and Campbell Soup Company.
For the second straight year, all the food collected by postal workers out of the Indian Rocks Beach Post Office will serve the mission of the Beach Community Food Pantry at Calvary Episcopal Church in IRB. In addition to Indian Rocks Beach, that post office serves Indian Shores, Belleair Beach and Belleair Shore.
“Last year we received close to four tons of food,” said Harvey Brillat, who oversees operation of the Beach Community Food Pantry. “The trucks would come by and drop off food, then go back out.”
Brillat said the postal workers’ food drive helps the food pantry get through the summer.
“Donations fall off during the summer, but the need for food doesn’t,” he said.
Participating in the nation’s largest single-day food drive is as simple as filling a bag with non-perishable food items and leaving it next to your mailbox for the postal carrier on Saturday. Donors are asked to avoid glass containers or expired food items.
