Law enforcement remember the fallen
Article published on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
PINELLAS COUNTY – Pinellas County law enforcement, with elected officials and representatives from state and local agencies will come together on Wednesday, May 14, for the 21st Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service to remember those police officers who died in the line of duty in Pinellas County.

The featured Speaker is the Honorable Robert J. Morris, Jr., Chief Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit.

The occasion also features the roll-call of those 20 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in service to Pinellas County citizens since 1905. The most recent death occurred in 1993 with Belleair Police Officer Jeffrey Tackett.

There will be a wreath laying, a 21-gun-salute and "Taps" performed by Clearwater Police Cpl. John Pickart. The Dunedin High School Highlanders Pipe Band will also play the bagpipes during the service.

The service is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Memorial Park, located just west of the Sheriff's Office at 10750 Ulmerton Rd., Largo.

The event takes place every year during National Police Week, when officers lost in the line of duty nationwide are remembered for their sacrifice. The event is of particular import this year in the light of recent events where a St. Petersburg police officer was shot and wounded and two deputy sheriffs were fired upon, and one wounded, during separate encounters with armed suspects.
