PINELLAS COUNTY – With gas prices continuing to rise every day, finding entertainment close to home is the goal of many. Fortunately, that’s an easy thing to do in Pinellas. Take a look at the some of the weekend’s highlights.

- Cooters Raw Bar & Restaurant, 423 Poinsettia Ave. Clearwater Beach, is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a three-day tent party, May 16-18.

- The city of Safety Harbor is hosting the May Days Weekend of events on Friday, May 16, through Sunday May 18, 2008 on Main Street in Downtown Safety Harbor.

- More than 100 reenactors step into the future Saturday, May 17, at a free daylong Civil War Days event featuring military and homefront activities at Heritage Village in Largo.

- The 27th annual Syttende Mai Regatta is Saturday, May 17, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Shelter 7 in Philippe Park in Safety Harbor.

- Hosted by Southern Wine and Spirits and the Abilities Foundation, the second annual Tampa Bay Wine and Food Festival is Thursday through Saturday, May 15 to 17, at the Don CeSar Beach Resort, 3400 Gulf Blvd.

Stage and theater

Local stages and theaters have full calendars this weekend, including the following.

- The Salerno Theatre Co., "Tampa Bay's Musical Theatre Company is bringing its widely acclaimed theatrical concert production of "Broadway in Concert" back to the Hickman Theatre for a two-week run, May 15-25, at the Catherine Hickman Theatre, 5501 27th Ave. S., Gulfport.

- "Standing on the Corner" or "A Day in the Life of a Paper Box" by local playwright Gidget Cross plays May 15-June 1 at Venue Ensemble Theatre, 9125 U.S. 19 N.

- Known just as much for his permed hair as he is for his animated performances and quick wit, comedian Katt Williams has been making his mark in Hollywood for more than 10 years. Williams is appearing Blue Line Theatre at the St. Pete Times Forum on Friday, May 16, 8 p.m.

- The Francis Wilson Playhouse, 302 Seminole St., Clearwater, presents the hysterically funny Neil Simon comedy “Rumors” on Friday and Saturday May 16-17 and 23-24. 8 p.m.; Sunday, May 18 and 25, 2 p.m.

- Based on Shakespeare's comic masterpiece, with music composed by Felix Mendelssohn, Tampa Dancecenter presents the full length ballet, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Performances are Saturday, May 17, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m., at Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 Pine St.

Entertainment Calendar

As usual, the Entertainment Calendar is filled with plenty of fun and exciting things to do. Some of the highlights this week, include:

- Firefall takes the stage on Friday, May 16, 8 p.m., at the Largo Cultural Center, 105 Central Park Drive, Largo. Firefall transcends and embraces many industry labels – rock, soft rock, country rock, easy listening, unplugged, Americana and contemporary country. Their most successful hits include “You Are the Woman,” “Just Remember I Love You” and “Strange Way.” Tickets are $32 VIP, $29 in advance and $32 day of the show. Call 587-6793.

- An opening reception for the exhibit “A Mysterious Clarity” will take place on Friday, May 16, 7 p.m., at the Gulf Coast Museum of Art, 12211 Walsingham Road, Largo. The runs from May 17 through July 27. Offering three distinct views of the Florida landscape, “A Mysterious Clarity” will feature the work of Mark Messersmith, Lillian Garcia-Roig and Ray Burggraf. - The Seminole High School Talent Show is Friday, May 16, 7 p.m., in the school auditorium. The show will feature a variety of acts. Admission is $5. Proceeds will benefit the Seminole High School dance team.

- Local author Alden Matthews will be signing his newly-published book “My Three Worlds” on Saturday, May 17, 1 to 3 p.m., at Oak Trail Books, 1219 Florida Ave. “My Three Worlds,” published by AuthorHouse, provides a detailed account of Matthews’ incredible life over 85 years and three different “worlds” of living, including China, Japan and America. - Join other MONOPOLY players at Belleair Country Club on Saturday, May 17, 6:30 p.m., for an evening of fun and excitement. Proceeds support nonprofit organizations served by Charity Works throughout the Tampa Bay area. - Sol y Canto will make learning a second language fun with playful, imaginative songs when they perform on Saturday, May 17, 10:30 a.m., at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen Booth Road. Community Calendar

There’s nothing like having fun and helping your community at the same time. The Community Calendar is the best place to find happenings that are good for you and the community. Some of this weekend’s highlights include:

- Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Clearwater-Bayside, hosts a charity barbecue on Friday, May 16, 4 to 7 p.m., at 3070 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd., Clearwater. The hotel will partner with Sunshine Athletics to bring in donations for All Children’s Hospital and United Way of Tampa Bay. All the traditional barbecue fare will be served including hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and potato salad. A $5.50 donation is requested for adults; a $3.50 donation is requested for children age 7 and under. Call 724-6223.

- Seminole High School’s volleyball team is having a garage sale May 17, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 10941 Mohawk Road, Seminole to raise money for use of a summer practice facility. The team needs $4,000 to use the high school gym for summer practices. For details, call Jackie at 392-8737.
