Governor approves eminent domain law
Article published on Wednesday, May 17, 2006
TALLAHASSEE - Gov. Jeb Bush signed a law on May 11 to end the abuse of eminent domain and provide greater protection for the rights of private property owners.
According to an announcement from the governor's office, the law severely restricts state and local governments' power to take private property and transfer to another private entity.
"The right to own property is fundamental to freedom," Bush said. "Property ownership is the ultimate reward for hard work and symbolizes personal responsibility and independence. Thanks to the hard work of the Legislature, Florida now has the toughest protections for private property rights in the country."
