Florida celebrates Tourism Week
Article published on Wednesday, May 17, 2006 |
TALLAHASSEE – In recognition of travel and tourism’s economic, social and cultural impact in Florida, Visit Florida, the state’s official tourism marketing organization, announced today that it plans to observe Tourism Week through May 21.
Cities throughout the state are hosting events and travel specials to celebrate the fact that “We’re All in Florida’s Tourism Business.” Tourism Week is nationally sponsored by the Travel Industry Association of America.
Last year, about 85.8 million visitors came to Florida, and generated more than $57 billion to boost Florida’s economy. From entry level employees to top-level executives, more than 944,400 people with a combined income of more than $15.4 billion are employed statewide in the tourism field.
In celebration of the power of tourism, many local areas in Florida are offering travel deals and special celebrations. The Tampa Bay Convention & Visitors Bureau has teamed up with local hotels to offer visitors and residents specials, including everything from complimentary Busch Gardens tickets to specials at local hotels.
Four of Florida’s five official welcome centers will roll out the red carpet for visitors through May 19. Representatives from destinations and attractions will be present to provide visitors with free items, door prizes and vacation giveaways.
