CLEARWATER – A drug addicted paramedic quit last week after admitting he had a drug problem. He was arrested after admitting that he stole a drug from his fire station on Sand Key.

Darren R. Keith, 44, an 18-year veteran of the city Fire Department said he had become addicted to pain relievers because of chronic back pain. He brought the drug thefts to the city’s attention last week, according to fire Chief Jamie Geer.

Keith told his superiors that in March he had used a syringe to first draw some of the contents out of vials of Fentanyl, a narcotic. He said he would then inject water so that the vials would still appear full. He then reported the vials appeared to have been tampered with and they were thrown away.

Police charged Keith with one count of theft of a controlled substance.
