St. Petersburg man arrested after chase

KENNETH CITY - Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies arrested a St. Petersburg man on May 27 after he led them on a short vehicle pursuit as they searched for an armed robbery suspect near Kenneth City.

According to the sheriff's report, the pursuit began just after 2 p.m. near the Shady Oaks Apartment located at 5870 56th Avenue North in Kenneth City and ended minutes later near the intersection of 66th Street and 56th Avenue North.

According to deputies, Harold Roberson, 32, was observed driving at a high rate of speed on 58th Street North in an area where a search for an armed robbery suspect was taking place. Roberson was driving a white 2008 Dodge Charger with heavily tinted windows preventing deputies from seeing who was in the vehicle.

When a deputy activated his emergency lights and siren signaling the suspect to stop, instead he accelerated and fled west bound on 54th Avenue, the report said. Deputies said the pursuit reached speeds between 50-70 mph and that the suspect ran a red light at the intersection of 54th Avenue and 62nd Street.

The suspect turned north on 66th Street and the pursuit ended near 56th Avenue when a deputy used the precision immobilization technique to cause the suspect vehicle to spin out and stall. The suspect was then arrested without further incident and no injuries were reported.

Deputies say the suspect told them he had been visiting a friend in the area and when he saw all of the law enforcement activity he “freaked out” believing they were attempting to arrest him for outstanding warrants. The suspect was arrested for three outstanding felony warrants, one misdemeanor warrant. He was also arrested on one count each of driving with a suspended license, aggravated fleeing and eluding and possession of marijuana.
