Residents urged to use less reclaimed water
Article published on Friday, June 6, 2008 |
PINELLAS COUNTY – Utilities officials sent out an urgent plea to residents in the southern part of the county to begin an immediate reduction in reclaimed water. North county residents also were urged to practice water conservation.
According to a press release, demand on the system in south county has reached a critical stage with usage equaling or exceeding production. Officials said that if the high usage levels continue, the entire system would have to be shut down. The south county system is currently shut down from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day; however, the reclaimed water system continues to experience heavy demand.
The status of the system will be closely monitored to determine if voluntary reductions are working.
Pinellas County Utilities officials are requesting that north county reclaimed water customers limit irrigation.
If reclaimed water use is not immediately and substantially reduced, it will be necessary to implement zone control for north county customers, officials said. Continued dry conditions have dramatically increased consumption of the county’s reclaimed water resources as residents attempt to maximize irrigation of lawns and landscapes. As a result, the county’s reclaimed water system is being stressed beyond its limit.
The status of the system will be closely monitored to determine if voluntary reductions are working.
Conservation Tips
- Over-watering can actually damage a Florida lawn and prevent a deep, drought-tolerant root system from being established.
- Over-watering promotes weed growth and excessive thatch.
- Make sure your sprinklers water your lawn, not your driveway, road or sidewalk.
