TBN wins five awards in state contest

PINELLAS COUNTY – Tampa Bay Newspapers won two first place writing awards and three other awards in the Florida Press Association’s annual contest.
Tampa Bay Newspapers competed in the highest circulation division, 15,000 or more readers, and was presented the awards at the association’s annual convention June 6 at the Hilton at the Walt Disney Resort.
Winners for Tampa Bay Newspapers are:
• Tom Germond, first place, humorous column, for a column about a picture he took of a plastic duck that ran in the newspaper.
• Lee Clark Zumpe, first place, criticism, for his reviews of “No Country for Old Men,” “I am Legend” and “Casa Blue.”
• Lee Diekemper, second place, best obituary, for a story he wrote about the late Rick Taylor, who was the owner of Ricky T’s Bar and Grille who died March 3, 2007.
• Dan Smith, third place, editorial cartoon, for his cartoon on Bobby Bowden and a scandal at Florida State University.
• Tom Germond, third place, editorial writing, for an editorial on the controversy surrounding former Largo City Manager Steve Stanton and the Largo City Commission.
