Article published on Thursday, July 5, 2007
Tampa Bay Newspapers won five awards in the 2006 Better Weekly Newspaper Awards contest, including first place for Web site development in the highest circulation category.

The awards were presented to Tampa Bay Newspapers at the Florida Press Association’s annual convention June 22 at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa at Ponte Vedra and included:

- Seminole and Beach Beacon, Web site development, first place

- Pinellas Park Beacon, in-depth news reporting, staff, second place

- Seminole and Beach Beacon, sports picture, Ron Pollard, honorable mention

- Seminole Beacon, feature picture, Thomas Michalski, second place

- Belleair Bee, humorous column, Bob Driver, third place.

More than 1,800 entries were submitted to the contest statewide.

“Because the competition is so stringent in this contest and the judges all have backgrounds in journalism, we are gratified to win these awards,” said Tampa Bay Newspapers Executive Editor Tom Germond. “Florida has some of the best community newspapers in the country, and we are proud to be recognized for our efforts. It was a team effort.”
