TBN wins 17 awards in FPA contest

| Tampa Bay Newspapers came home the winner of 17 awards in the Florida Press Association’s Better Weekly Newspaper Contest. Winners were announced at the 2012 Southeastern Press Convention July 5-7 at Miramar Beach. |

Tampa Bay Newspapers won 17 awards in the Florida Press Association’s Better Weekly Newspaper Contest, including five first place awards.
“This is our best showing in the annual contest, which is highly competitive and is judged by experts in our profession,” said Tom Germond, TBN executive editor. “To win so many awards takes teamwork, dedication and hard work. The awards are a reflection of the tremendous commitment that our employees as well as our correspondents have to putting out great community newspapers.”
A total of 1,607 entries were submitted by 81 newspapers.
Here are the awards that Tampa Bay Newspapers received at the 2012 Southeastern Press Convention July 5-7 at Miramar Beach.
First place: Outdoor and recreational, Ann Weaver, Belleair Bee, “Rescuing baby bottlenose dolphin is seaside needle in a haystack.”
First place: Online breaking news coverage, Suzette and Terre Porter, Tom Germond, Alexandra Lundahl, Bob McClure, Largo Leader, “Storm damages Largo neighborhood.”
First place: Breaking news story, Suzette Porter, Tom Germond, Alexandra Lundahl, Terre Porter and Bob McClure, Largo Leader, “What a mess,” “28 structures uninhabitable due to substantial damage,” “Airport back to normal,” “In harm’s way.”
First place: Humorous column, Tom Germond, Belleair Bee, “Help wanted to change a light bulb.”
First place: Editorial page, staff, Pinellas Park Beacon.
Second place: Editorial page, staff, Belleair Bee.
Second place: General excellence, Chary Southmayd and staff, Belleair Bee.
Second place: Faith and family reporting, Alexandra Lundahl, Pinellas Park Beacon, “Families without a home.”
Second place: Breaking news story, Juliana A. Torres, Pinellas Park Beacon, “Twelve brutal hours.”
Second place: Humorous column, Tom Germond, Pinellas Park Beacon, “How to avoid being eaten alive.”
Third place: Sports picture, Matthew Riva, Seminole and Beach Beacons, “Competitive kids.”
Third place: James Fink, Clearwater Beacon, “Dinner is served.”
Third place: Arts, entertainment and review reporting, Lee Clark Zumpe, Belleair Bee, “EOT delivers,” “Abrams evokes” and “Serkis’ performance,” Belleair Bee.
