Proposed county budget may cut taxes
Article published on Wednesday, July 12, 2006
CLEARWATER - Residents may get a tax break next year if the county Board of Commissioners approves the proposed $1.96 billion Fiscal Year 2007 Annual Operating and Capital Budget.

County Administrator Steve Spratt said told the BCC at its July 11 meeting that the proposed budget recommends a decrease in the countywide property tax millage rate from 6.801 mills to 6.600 mills. The reduction would be the first decrease since the 1997 budget year, according to a press release from the Communication's Department. If approved, an owner of a single-family home valued at $150,000 would save about $30.

One mill is equal to $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.

"This budget continues Pinellas County's tradition of prudent fiscal management and responsive public services," Spratt said in the press release. "It reflects our continued goal to provide high quality services at a reasonable cost to the community."

Commissioner Ken Welch said the budget included affordable housing, mental health, environment as well as traditional items, such as transportation and law enforcement.

"It's a strong budget," Welch said.

Spratt said the budget also included some additional tax savings in ad valorem and special assessments for people in unincorporated areas and for fire districts.

The full budget is scheduled to be available on the county's Web site, www.pinellascounty.org, by Friday, July 14.
