PINELLAS COUNTY – The National Hurricane Center upgraded Dolly to a hurricane Tuesday afternoon. It is the second of the 2008 season.
A hurricane warning was in effect for the coast of Texas from Brownsville to Corpus Christi and for portions of the northeast coast of Mexico.
At 5 p.m., the center of the storm was about 165 miles east-southeast of Brownsville, Texas. The NHC said the core of the Dolly should move near northeastern Mexico or extreme southern Texas on Wednesday.
Maximum sustained winds had increased to near 75 mph with higher gusts. Dolly was a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.
The NHC also reported Tuesday afternoon that Tropical Storm Cristobal was starting to lose tropical characteristics and was expected to be downgraded to depression overnight.
The NHC issued its last advisory on Tropical Storm Bertha on July 20. Bertha was the first hurricane of 2008 and the first major hurricane.
The NHC predicts that as many as 16 named storms could form in 2008. Of that number six to nine could be hurricanes and two to five could strengthen into major hurricanes. A major hurricane is a Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
An average season has 11 named storms, including six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.
Emergency management officials continue to urge residents to stay prepared and in tune with local weather forecasts throughout hurricane season. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
