County EOC active, information center open
Article published on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008
PINELLAS COUNTY – The county's Emergency Operations Center is fully active and the Citizen’s Information Center is open to answer residents' concerns about Tropical Storm Fay.

Citizens with questions can call 727-464-4333.

Officials remind citizens that they should not call 911 unless they have an emergency.

Pinellas County is currently under a hurricane watch, meaning hurricane conditions are possible in the area within about 36 hours.

The Board of County Commissioners approved a Level A, Category 1, evacuation to begin at 6 a.m. Tuesday. All residents are advised to continue making hurricane preparation prior to the arrival of the storm on Tuesday.

Some of the things, residents should do include:

- Fill vehicle gas tank

- Get cash and secure papers and valuables

- Refill medications

- Fill containers and tubs with water, even if evacuating - you may need the water when you return

- Secure yard equipment and furniture

- Be prepared to shutter windows

- Help neighbors with their preparations

- If your plans are to evacuate out of the local area, make final preparations to secure your home so you can leave as soon as an evacuation order is issued

- If you are pre-registered for transportation to a public shelter, be sure you have everything you need

People with pets need to have a plan that includes evacuating with the pets or leaving them with a friend or family member that lives in a non-evacuation area. Pet owners can pre-register for a pet shelter by calling 727-582-2150

Twelve shelters, including three pet-friendly shelters will open Tuesday morning.

Citizens are encouraged to check the Pinellas County Web site at www.pinellascounty.org/emergency, pick up a Hurricane Guide at their local fire department, city hall or library or tune in to PCC-TV for storm-related programming (Bright House 622, Knology 18, Verizon 44)
