Weekend calendar filled with variety

PINELLAS COUNTY – Although the official start of the fall season doesn’t begin until Sept. 23, event’s calendars are already filling up as everyone anticipates the coming cooler weather.
This weekend there’s plenty to do both indoors and out all around Pinellas and beyond. The following are some of the highlights.
Music and concerts
Tickets were still available as of Thursday evening for the Heaven and Hell Tour at the St. Pete Times in Tampa on Friday, Sept. 14. Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice reunite for the first time in 15 years. Show time is 6:30 p.m. All tickets are priced at $59.75 and available at the McDonald's Box Office at the Forum and all Ticketmaster outlets. To order by phone, call 727-898-2100.
An eclectic selection of acts is set to perform at WMNF’s Birthday Bash on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Cuban Club, 2010 Avenida Republica de Cuba, Ybor City. The Birthday Bash will feature three stages of music showcasing 15 different bands. There will be a dance contest and free birthday cake. Tickets are $23 and are available by calling 813-238-8001, online at www.wmnf.org.
The Nationally syndicated Rock Solid Pressure Industry Showcase takes off with a pre-party on Sept. 14, 7 p.m., before the big event on Saturday, Sept. 15, noon, at Bourbon Street Night Club, 4331 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. Described by organizers as the "calm before the storm," Friday night's pre-party is a chance for labels and industry insiders to network while they listen to the music. The musical line-up for the evening includes, Autumns Threshold, The Dive Bar Stalkers, Core and national recording artist Lennon, who just came off the road with Aerosmith and Motley Crue. Tickets are $15. Saturday night is the big event as 20 unsigned bands throughout the state and nation take the stage hoping to gain the industries attention. Tickets for the all-day event are $15. Working Class Tour, starring Rick Springfield with Eddie Money and John Waite, makes a stop at Ruth Eckerd Hall on Saturday, Sept. 15, 7 p.m. Tickets are $100, $55 and $49.75 and available at the REH Box Office, 1111 McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater, by phone at 727-791-7400 or order online at www.rutheckerdhall.com. Stage and theater
The Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center's community theatre season opens with a mysterious and hilarious bang with its production of the wickedly funny play by Anthony Shaffer, "Whodunnit" runs Sept. 14-16 and 21-23. Show times are 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sundays. Reserved seat tickets are $20; $18 for center members and students. Sign Language interpreter will be present at the Sept. 16 matinee.
Enjoy the show and help a worthy cause. Eckerd Theater Company’s Saturday, Sept. 15, performance of "The Hundred Dresses" will benefit Clearwater’s Homeless Emergency Project (HEP), a nonprofit organization that aids low income and homeless individuals and families in Pinellas County. Show times are 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. in the Murray Studio Theater at Ruth Eckerd Hall. “Angel Street,” by English playwright Patrick Hamilton, a production of Ed Fletcher’s Early Bird Dinner Theatre, continues through Oct. 28 at the Italian American Club, 200 S. McMullen Booth Road. Performances are Thursday through Sunday, seating at 4 p.m., curtain at 6 p.m. Matinees will be Thursday and Saturday, seating at 11 a.m., curtain at 1 p.m. Tickets are $29.90 plus tax and include music, dinner and the show. Enjoy the opening of Eight O' Clock Theater performance of the Victorian thriller “Gaslight” at the Largo Cultural Center this weekend. Curtain time is 8 p.m., Thursday through Saturday with Sunday matinees at 2p.m. Tickets are $20 adults, $15 Students 19 & under (ID required) $18 for groups of 10 or more. Catch the last weekend of Francis Wilson Playhouse’s new production of “The Odd Couple,” the first show of the 78th season and its the 600th production. The show continues through Sept.16. Performances begin at 8 p.m. with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $20 for adults; $10 for students. The playhouse is located at 302 Seminole St., Clearwater. This also is the last weekend to see The Salerno Theatre Company’s production of one of the longest-running musical in the world, "The Fantasticks," running through Sept. 16, at the Catherine Hickman Theatre in Gulfport. Show times are 8 p.m. with Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $25 for adults and $22 for seniors (65+). Group rates are available for parties of 10 or more. The St. Petersburg Little Theatre 83rd season opener, the Broadway blockbuster musical “Gypsy,” ends its run on Sept. 16. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays, 8 p.m. Matinees are Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 adults and $10 students. Group rates are available. The theater is at 4025 31st St. S. It’s also the final weekend to browse through an exhibit of artworks by Dwayne Shepherd, SPLT’s Art Gallery director. The exhibition in the lobby gallery will run through Sunday, Sept. 16.
