Deputy Rick Stemboroski straps on a bicycle helmet to one of many recipients at the giveaway Sept. 21 at Amscot Financial Services.

LARGO – Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies, Pinellas County Sheriff’s school crossing guards and staff from Amscot Financial Services handed out free bicycle helmets Sept. 21 at Amscot Financial, 11156 Starkey Road.

With more bicycle versus vehicle crashes occurring each year in the state, more efforts need to be undertaken to protect children, according to a press release from the Sheriff's office.

The Sept. 21 helmet giveaway was part of a safety campaign, by Bay area law enforcement and Amscot Financial, designed to bring a heightened awareness on bicycle safety, especially among young children.

Business was brisk. According to Deputy Kris Fratus, there were 400 helmets to give away. At the end of the event none remained.

Plans are already underway for next year.
