GULFPORT - The Art Village Courtyard and City of Imagination will present "The Burial at Thebes," a contemporary adaptation of Sophocle's Antigone by the Cruciverbalist Collective Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 20 to 29, 8 p.m., in the Art Village Courtyard, 2900-2914 Beach Blvd. S.
In war-ravaged Thebes, the sun breaks on the first morning of peace. But peace is fleeting. Antigone is determined to honor the gods and give a proper burial to her brother. Her uncle Creon, the new ruler in this fragile state, has decreed that brother a traitor and threatens to kill anyone who honors that traitor. In this poetic retelling of Sophocles' great tragedy, the classic struggle between the moral code of the individual and the needs of the state comes to life. Performed outdoors as the ancients might have viewed it. Yet, change the names and this play could have been written this very year.
Admission is $10. Advance tickets are available at Kool Beans Kafe and the Art Village Courtyard. Call 896-1982.
Proceeds go to the Cruciverbalist Collective Production.
