Former Treasure Island mayor found dead in pool

SEMINOLE – Pinellas County Sheriff's detectives are investigating the Oct. 12 death of former Treasure Island Mayor Walter Stubbs who was found dead in his pool, a victim of an apparent drowning.

Deputies responded at about 3:54 p.m. to the 14300 block of Mark Drive. According to detectives, Stubbs’ wife and her daughter had gone to the beach. Upon their return, they saw him at the bottom of the pool. They immediately called 911.

Suncoast Fire Rescue responded to the scene and retrieved the 93-year-old man out of the water. Stubbs was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

Stubbs served as mayor of Treasure Island from 1977 to 1997 after being elected to the city commission in 1973.

Services are Friday, Oct. 17, at Memorial Park, 49th Street and 54th Avenue North, with visitation at 5 p.m. and services at 6. Burial will follow Oct. 18, 2 p.m., at Sylvan Abbey cemetery in Clearwater.
