Hollywood dominates Halloween attire
Article published on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007
PINELLAS COUNTY – People expecting vampires, witches and zombies to ring their doorbell this Halloween may be disappointed. It seems that Hollywood has taken over Halloween.

In the past, most Halloween costumes were scary, and often reflected the latest Hollywood horror films, such as “Dracula” or “Frankenstein.”

Extreme Halloween, an online costume retailer, recently released its top 10 list of Halloween costumes for 2007, according to a press release from PRWEB. A peek at the list and browsing of other costume shops on the Internet shows that Hollywood has taken over Halloween.

Denise Bernard at the House of Make Believe in Clearwater said it seems that Hollywood characters are more popular than scary these days.

“People want to be Hollywood characters,” she said. “We still have the die-hard that want to dress up scary, but those costumes aren’t the most popular.”

She said some people go “way out” in not only dressing up, but with makeup and accessories. She also said adults were big on Halloween.

“It’s not just the kids,” she said.

Among the most popular costumes being sold at House of Make Believe are Roman styled from the movie “300,” Bernard said. Another popular selection is the caveman, from the Geico commercial. Pirates are big as are Egyptian themes.

A perusal of online costume offerings shows that Hollywood definitely dominates the market. Thanks to “Pirates of the Caribbean,” a huge selection of pirate and buccaneer costumes is offered for children and adults. “Spiderman” costumes are prevalent. Other offerings from Hollywood include “Shrek,” “Spiderman,” “Star Wars,” “Power Rangers,” Wizard of Oz” and Harry Potter.
