Mars is 54 million miles away from earth when NASA's Hubble Space Telescope snapped this photo on June 30, 1999.
ST. PETERSBURG – The Science Center will offer the Mars Spectacular on Saturday, Oct. 29, 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., to observe the planet's closest proximity to the earth for 2005.

Members of the St. Petersburg Astronomy Club will man the center’s powerful 16-inch Meade telescope and present information on Mars, other planets and astronomy in general.

A planetarium show also will be offered at 8 p.m. This event is free.

Mars came within about 35 million miles of the earth in August of 2003, the closest in more than 60,000 years.

The planets won't be as close in 2005, but they will be close enough to make for a good show, according to local astronomers.

The Science Center is at 7701 22nd Ave. N. Call 383-0027 or visit www.sciencecenterofpinellas.com.
