This single-engine plane made an emergency landing on Sand Key beach.
CLEARWATER – A single-engine plane made an emergency landing on Sand Key beach Sept. 18 at about 12:50 p.m., causing no injuries.
The plane landed just south of the Sheraton Sand Key high up on the beach about 200 feet above the water line, said Clearwater Public Safety spokesman Rob Shaw.
Neither the pilot nor the other person on board were injured. The pilot told an officer the experimental aircraft had some type of mechanical issue. He was looking for a place to land and found a wide-open stretch of the beach.
“Thankfully it was a very desolate and abandoned stretch of the beach where there were no people at that time,” Shaw said.
Clearwater officials notified the FAA, which is investigating the incident.
“This doesn’t happen on the beach too often, thankfully,” Shaw said.
