LARGO – Largo police arrested a 48-year-old Clearwater man Sept. 28 for making a false report concerning planting a bomb or explosive, a second-degree felony.
Largo police received a call about 3 p.m. from the general manager of the Red Lobster restaurant in the Largo Mall, 10500 Ulmerton Road. The manager told police that a black male with a bag had entered the restaurant and told the hostess, “just to make you smile, I work for the Taliban and I have a bomb in this bag.”
The man then asked for a booth near a window, where he and an unknown female were seated away from other diners.
Diners and staff were quietly evacuated through the east door of the restaurant. Patrol officers set up a perimeter around the building.
At 3:20 p.m., the man left the restaurant via the front door. He told officers there was nothing in the bag and that he was just joking. Freddie Claudrick Bryant was taken into custody and the Tampa Bomb Squad was asked to come check the contents of the bag. The bomb squad confirmed there were no explosives or other suspicious materials in the backpack.
Bryant also was charged with three counts of sale or delivery of cocaine and three counts of possession of cocaine. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail. Bail was set at $28,000.
