Seminole Historical Society meeting
SEMINOLE – BonSue Brandvik, preservationist and author of historic romance novels, will speak at the next Seminole Historical Society meeting, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 7 p.m., at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St. N., Room 210B.

Brandvik will discuss ongoing efforts to salvage the iconic Belleview Biltmore hotel.

From its opening in 1897, the resort attracted many visitors and played a significant role in the development of Pinellas County. Now, after reigning over the highest bluff on the Gulf Coast for more than 100 years as the largest occupied wooden structure in the world, it has fallen upon hard times.

Although its future is in dispute, it is still the source of legends, lore and reports of paranormal activity. Brandvik will bring copies of her Biltmore-themed novel.

Admission is free and open to the public. Call 391-1433 for more information.

325th Fighter Group reunion
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – The 325th Fighter Group, known as the Checkertail Clan – a name given to them by Axis Sally – will host its 69th reunion Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 25-28, at the Holiday Inn Harbourside, 401 Second St., Indian Rocks Beach.

The 325th is one of the few World War II units still actively meeting for reunions. The 325th has a long and unique history. It went to war on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, CV-4. Its members flew Army P-40 Warhawks to North Africa in January 1943. It was the first unit in the Army Air Force to have unique markings on its planes.

After the conquest of Sicily, the 325th transitioned to P-47s and moved to Italy to protect the bombers of the 15th Air Force. Several months later they were upgraded again to P-51s. This enabled them to be the first fighter groups to escort bombers to Russia.

The 325th went on to become the highest scoring fighter group in the Mediterranean, and one of the highest in all Europe. To learn more about the 325th, visit the website checkertails.org.
