Animal Services adoption event

Back to School Care Fair
ST. PETERSBURG – The Junior League of St. Petersburg will host a Back to School Care Fair on Saturday, July 30, 8 a.m. to noon, at Enoch Davis Recreation Center, 1111 18th Ave. S., St. Petersburg.

The event will provide school physicals, medical screenings, backpacks with school supplies, an educational street fair and community resource information. All services and supplies are made available at no cost to participants. 

The Back to School Care Fair was developed to prepare students K-12 for success. Over the last two decades, the fair has provided an estimated 6,500 medical exams, 25,000 backpacks with school supplies, distributed thousands of age-appropriate chapter books and dedicated countless volunteer hours to the children and families most in need of these resources. 

The Junior League’s 20th annual Back to School Care Fair is a collaboration of local community organizations such as Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the city of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County Schools and many others. The event hosts an outdoor family-friendly street fair complete with educational exhibits and interactive entertainment. Inside the event, students accompanied by an adult can receive free medical, dental and vision exams, school physicals and brand new backpacks filled with school supplies. Parents can also find information on a variety of community resources at the agency fair, designed for nonprofits offering services to families.

Book Maniacs’ Mini-Golf
LARGO – Make a hole-in-one at Largo Public Library’s third annual Book Maniacs’ Mini-Golf event Saturday, July 30. Play a round of mini-golf, putter through the vendor shopping area, or grab a treat between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The last tee time is at 3:30 p.m.

The indoor family-friendly golf course features 18 book-themed holes. Tickets are $2 per person per round of golf and $6 for a group of four per round. Children, ages 12 and younger, must be accompanied by an adult.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of Largo Library and other local businesses, and has been developed by the library’s teen volunteers as a fundraiser for programs and materials for the Teen Room.

Get in the Game
CLEARWATER – Senior Actors Guild & Education Services will present “Get in the Game,” a comedy with a “don’t let life pass you by” theme, on Saturday, July 30, 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, July 31, 2 p.m., on stage at the social hall at Temple B’nai Israel, 1685 S. Belcher Road, Clearwater.

Cost is $20 for Saturday’s gala performance, which will include hors d’oeuvres and live piano musical overture and intermission. The matinee standard performance on Sunday is $15.

Misa en Español
SEMINOLE – St. Justin, Martyr Catholic Church recently added a Misa en Español every Saturday at 6 p.m.  Other Masses are presented Saturday, 4 p.m.; Sunday, 8:45 and 10:45 a.m. (in English); and Sunday, 7 p.m. (in Portuguese). Daily Mass is at 8:30 a.m., preceded by the Rosary.

Nar-Anon meeting

Nar-Anon, a 12-step support group for families and friends of addicts, is a worldwide fellowship that offers help by sharing experience, strength and hope. The group is designed for those affected by someone’s addiction.

Republican Club translation services
CLEARWATER – The Hispanic Republican Club of Pinellas County offers translation services, citizenship classes and other assistance on Saturdays at its office at 1167 Woodlawn St. The office is open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All services are free of charge.

Sgt. Eric Landon Fun Run
DUNEDIN – The inaugural Sgt. Eric Landon Fun Run to benefit the group Stop Soldier Suicide will be held Saturday, July 30, 9 a.m., at Pioneer Park in downtown Dunedin.

The event will include music, food and family fun following the run.

The event is sponsored by Holland Group Retirement Wealth Advisors.

“More than 22 veterans and one active duty soldier are lost every day to suicide and our family has first-hand experience with this,” said Steven Holland, president of the Holland Group. “My son-in-law, Sgt. Eric Landon, served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, witnessed the deaths of several of his good friends and as a result suffered tremendously from post-traumatic stress disorder. In honor of Eric, we are proud to be able to play a role in bringing awareness to this cause by sponsoring this event, and look forward to making a big impact for Stop Soldier Suicide.”

Stop Soldier Suicide is the first national civilian not-for-profit organization dedicated to preventing active duty and veteran suicide.
