Crafts for veterans
PINELLAS PARK – The Pinellas Park Senior Center, 7625 59th St. N., will offer a weekly craft workshop for veterans on Fridays, 1 to 4 p.m.

Projects, which are donated by the Help Hospitalized Veterans Program, include model cars, wood projects, leatherwork, needlecrafts, poster art, beadwork and more.

The crafts aid in rehabilitation, and are designed to restore coordination and impaired motor skills, improve attention spans and concentration, and relieve symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions.

Green benches commemoration
ST. PETERSBURG – The 100th anniversary of St. Petersburg’s world famous green benches will be commemorated Friday, Sept. 30, 2-3 p.m., at The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay, 1255 Pasadena Ave. S.

In honor of the event, former mayor Rick Baker will talk about the long history of the slatted seating.

The festivities will include entertainment by Big City Music.

Prayer breakfast
TARPON SPRINGS – The Shepherd Center will host the fourth annual prayer breakfast Friday, Sept. 30, 7:30 to 9 a.m., at Spanos-Pappas Community Center, in Theofilos Hall, 348 N. Pinellas Ave., Tarpon Springs.

This is an opportunity to gather together in prayer and unite neighbors, raise awareness, and challenge the community to action. Attendance at this event has exceeded 200 guests for the past two years. Once again North Pinellas County community leaders, state and local politicians, city commissioners, elected officials, clergy and concerned citizens are invited to attend.

The breakfast will be buffet style and the program will begin promptly at 8 a.m. The cost to attend is $25 per person, $200 for a table of eight and sponsorships ranging from $100 to $5,000 are available. For information on becoming a sponsor, call Darlene Parker at 727-940-5357.

The Shepherd Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, which has been providing services to the community for more than 40 years.

Senior investment club
ST. PETERSBURG – A senior investment club conducts discussions every Friday at 10 a.m. at the Sunshine Center, 330 Fifth St. N.

The free club is open to the public and will feature discussions on anything related to investing. Share your best picks or your worst picks. Ask questions, give your opinion. It’s all about education and fun.

The Children’s Hour
PALM HARBOR – “The Children’s Hour” by Lillian Hellman will be presented Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, 7 p.m., at Palm Harbor University High School, 1900 Omaha St., Palm Harbor.

Tickets are $10 at the door.

Palm Harbor University's Troupe 5590 will present “The Children’s Hour,” a serious and adult play about two women who run a school for girls. After a malicious youngster starts a rumor about the two women, the rumor soon turns to scandal. As the young girl comes to understand the power she wields, she sticks by her story, which precipitates tragedy for the women. It is later discovered that the gossip was pure invention, but it is too late. Irreparable damage has been done.

Archery class
CLEARWATER – An archery class will be offered Saturday, Oct. 1, 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., at Moccasin Lake Environmental Education Center, 2750 Park Trail Lane, Clearwater.

Cost is $5 with a Clearwater recreation card or $6 with no card.

Designed for children ages 8 through 18, the class teaches the basics of archery.

BBQ Cook-off and Rodeo
PINELLAS PARK – The Public Works department will hold its BBQ Cook-off & Rodeo Saturday, Oct. 1, noon to 10 p.m., at England Brothers Park, 5010 81st Ave. N.  A full rodeo with bull riding will take place from 4 to 7 p.m.

Contestants can compete in either pork butts, ribs or both. To register a team, call 727-369-5617.

Entry is free. The event includes live entertainment, beer, fireworks, children’s rides and bounce houses, and more.

Bands scheduled to perform throughout the day include Bay Bluegrass, Clemons Road, Pirate Flag and Confederate Railroad.

Proceeds from the cook-off will benefit People Helping People, a local charitable organization that helps residents that are elderly, disabled or incapacitated on fixed incomes by helping with their yardwork or minor repairs to their properties.

Blessing of the Animals
CLEARWATER – A Blessing of the Animals event will be presented Saturday, Oct. 1, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., at Crest Lake Park, 201 S. Glenwood Ave., Clearwater.

The event will feature live music, photo sessions with pets and a blessing from a celebrant of the Light of Christ Church.

All pets are allowed at the event but attendees must observe all park rules. Sponsored by the Crest Lake Park Friends, the event aims to bring together the local community to celebrate peace and unity between humans and animals.

People are encouraged to bring their dogs and other pets to the event for photo sessions, live music by a local musician, homemade doggy treats and a very special blessing from a celebrant of the Light of Christ Church.

Bags for waste and littler will also be provided. People are advised to bring their own chairs.
