American Legion cookout
SEMINOLE – American Legion Post 252, 11433 Park Blvd., holds a cookout every Saturday and Sunday at the Tiki Bar from 1 to 5 p.m.

Breakfast is held the first Sunday of every month from 8 to 11 a.m. and the monthly spaghetti dinner is held the first Tuesday of each month from 5 to 7 p.m.  

The dining room is open to the public. Legion membership is required to purchase alcohol.

Chili Cook-off and Classic Car Show
LARGO – The Armed Forces History Museum welcomes the First Responders Chili Cook-off and Classic Car Show Saturday, Sept. 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 2050 34th Way N.

First responders from Pinellas and Hillsborough counties will compete to be crowned chili champs. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children ages 4 to 12.

The afternoon will be filled with all the chili you can sample, classic cars, a Budweiser beer truck, a cupcake truck, hot dogs and snacks, World War II M8 vehicle rides, virtual simulator rides, museum tours and a live DJ from Rhino Cubes. Event sponsors are Great Bay Distributors/Budweiser, Shasta, Rip It Beverages, Little Greek Restaurants, Let’s Roll Promotions, Q105 and WQYK.

The events acts as a fundraiser for the museum’s community outreach, veteran and youth education programs.

Daddy-Daughter dance
LARGO – The Largo Community Center will host the 37th annual Daddy Daughter Date Night Saturday, Sept. 20, 5 to 8 p.m., at 400 Alt. Keene Road.

This year’s theme is “Fiesta, Fiesta.” Fathers and daughters of all ages will enjoy a night of dinner, dancing and games. Girls will be able to design maracas and try their hand at a piñata.

This year, the event will cost less: only $39 per couple and $12 for each additional daughter. Tickets for this event are now on sale and can be purchased at any of the city’s recreation facilities.

Drive Electric Day
OLDSMAR – Oldsmar is hosting Drive Electric Day Saturday, Sept. 20, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., 100 State St. W. The one-day event is made possible through a partnership with the city of Oldsmar, NovaCharge and the Sierra Club.

Those attending will have an opportunity to ride and drive in electric cars ranging from BMW i3 to the Nissan LEAF.

Hawk homecoming
LARGO – The McGough Nature Park will formally welcome home two red-shouldered hawks to their new home and introduce the birds of prey to the community Saturday, Sept. 20, 3 to 6 p.m., at 11901 146th St. N  

The center will reveal the winning name of the male red-shoulder hawk and sharing the story of the birds’ journey. This free event will be an educational opportunity to learn about birds of prey and conservation.

Healthy teacher workshop
CLEARWATER – Whole Foods Market is hosting a pre-opening Healthy Teachers workshop on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on both days at 27001 U.S. 19.

The classes are free and designed to equip teachers, principals, and school administrators with the knowledge and tools necessary to transform their own health and well-being; serve as healthful role models for students; and become agents of change in their schools and communities.

Developed by the Whole Kids Foundation, the classes also will provide an overview on the basic principles of healthy eating and cooking.

Mobile collection for chemicals, electronics
SEMINOLE - Pinellas County residents can safely dispose of many household electronics and chemicals at the next free household mobile collection Saturday, Sept. 20, at Seminole High School, 8401 131st St. N., Seminole.

Offered by Pinellas County Solid Waste, the collection runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For everyone’s safety, participants must be in a vehicle. The event is subject to change due to severe weather.

Residents can drop off electronics such as camcorders, cellphones, computers, TVs, DVD players and microwave ovens. Chemical items accepted include automotive fluids, batteries, fuel, paint and fluorescent bulbs along with other mercury containing devices.

Residents should not mix chemicals together or place them in dark plastic bags and should keep products in original, labeled containers if possible. Individual batteries should be placed in separate plastic bags or have terminals covered with heavy tape to prevent short-circuits.

Items that will not be accepted include air conditioning units and other large appliances, radioactive, biological or infectious waste, fire extinguishers, tires and propane tanks.

The September event is the eleventh collection offered in 2014. Three more are scheduled for October, and another in November in locations throughout the county.

Businesses can participate in the mobile collection events for a fee. Businesses can arrange for drop-off and payment by calling EQ Florida at 813-319-3400 for chemicals and Diversified Recycling for electronics at 800-936-1477.

Mother Son Messy Madness
LARGO – Registration has opened for the city of Largo’s third annual Mother Son Messy Madness Saturday, Sept. 20, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Highland Recreation Complex.  

The special night is just for moms and sons ages 5 to 13. This year’s theme is “Down on the Farm.” Dinner, dessert and messy, high-energy games, for moms and sons, are all included. Bring towels, as Largo Fire

Rescue will be on site with a fire truck to help spray participants clean after the activities.  

The cost is $25 per couple and $8 for each additional son. Spaces are limited. Register at Highland Recreation Complex; the deadline is Friday, Sept. 12.

Paint at the Community Center
LARGO – Enjoy the beautiful park setting at the Largo Community Center or spend a fun evening with friends in the art room while creating your very own masterpiece.  

The center will host a Mimosa Morning Saturday, Sept. 20, 10 a.m., and a Painting Party Thursday, Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m., at 400 Alt. Keene Road.

The cost is $40 for residents and $50 for nonresidents. It includes a 16-by-20-foot canvas, all paints and supplies and up to two mimosas or beer and wine, soda or water.
