Aquatic fitness classes
ST. PETE BEACH – The St. Pete Beach Recreation Department is again offering aquatic fitness classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 10 to Sept. 22, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. at the St. Pete Beach Aquatic Center, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive.

The cost is $5 for St. Pete Beach residents and $6 for nonresidents. Silver Sneakers members are welcome. Aquatic fitness provides muscle toning and a cardio workout with the benefits and support of the water.

Lighthouse of Pinellas tour
LARGO – A Lighthouse tour and presentation of “The Amazing Eye” will take place Thursday, Aug. 27, 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Lighthouse of Pinellas, 6925 112th Circle North, Suite 103 in Largo.

The Lighthouse tour will feature LHP’s Blind Babies Program, Independent Living Skills Program, and Orientation and Mobility Training Program and will provide attendees the opportunity to experience a “hands on” demonstration and interaction.

Ronald C. Tucker, O.D., P.A., will present the anatomy of the eye, and will discuss how vision works, common eye problems that lead to blindness, prevention of blindness, and optical illusions. Tucker received a Doctor of Optometry degree from the University Of Houston College Of Optometry. He is a graduate of the University of Florida, and served as chairman of the optometry department at CIGNA prior to starting his own practice in Largo.

Oil painting classes
INDIAN SHORES – Oil painting classes are held Thursdays, 1 to 3:30 p.m., at the Indian Shores Municipal Building, 19305 Gulf Blvd.

Classes are for both beginners and the more experienced intermediate artists. New students begin with basic fundamentals and move toward working independently from their own photographs or subject matter. Class time consists of a demo, an instructional time, painting time, and  critique time. Instructor Betsy Schoepf works with each student individually.

Students will learn about paints, brushes, color mixing, composition, and all of the basics needed to form a foundation in traditional oil painting.  Individual creativity is emphasized.

Ombudsman local council meeting
LARGO – The local council of Florida’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteers to join its corps of dedicated advocates who protect the rights of elders residing in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family care homes.

The local council is seeking additional volunteers to identify, investigate and resolve residents’ concerns. Special training and certification is provided.

All interested individuals who care about protecting the health, safety, welfare and rights of long-term care facility residents – who often have no one else to advocate for them – are encouraged to call 888-831-0404 or visit the program’s website at

The local council meets to discuss the program’s current activities and give the public a chance to provide comments about long-term care facility issues on the fourth Thursdays at the Mary Grizzle Building, 11351 Ulmerton Road, Room 136, in Largo. The open session of these meetings begins at 1 p.m.

Concerned citizens and those interested in volunteering are welcome to attend.

Seminole Junior Woman’s Club meeting
SEMINOLE – The GFWC Seminole Junior Woman’s Club meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex, 9100 113th St. N.

The group is dedicated to serving the community, particularly through programs helping children. Club activities include providing dinner to families at the Ronald McDonald House in St. Petersburg; and the SJWC’s annual “Share Our Spirit” food drive, which helps feed Seminole children during the winter holiday break.

Windlasses new member coffee and orientation
DUNEDIN – Windlasses women’s sailing club will hold a new member coffee and orientation Thursday, Aug. 27, 9:30-11 a.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, 3455 Scotland St.

AARP Driver Safety Course
SAFETY HARBOR – The AARP Driver Safety Course will be held at the Safety Harbor Public Library, 101 2nd Street North on Aug. 28, from 1 to 6 p.m.

AARP offers the nation’s first and largest refresher course for drivers ages 50 and older. Gain the skills and tools you need to drive safely on today’s roads.

Update your knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. Continued driver education reduces your chances of receiving traffic violations or being involved in an accident and may qualify you for an insurance discount. Ceilidhs, traditional Gaelic social gatherings
Ceilidhs, traditional Gaelic social gatherings, are held every Friday night from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Scottish American Society of Dunedin, 917 Louden Ave.

The cost is $3 and $5 for nonmembers. The social club is dedicated to the preservation of Scottish culture, offering Scottish country dancing, line dancing, holiday dinners and parties.
