Bogus Pomp Electric Band
Bogus Pomp Electric Band, Friday, July 31, 8 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 1, 8 p.m., at the Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N., St. Petersburg. General admission is $20. Call 822-3590 or visit

Zappa enthusiasts won’t want to miss either night in the intimacy of the Palladium’s Side Door nightclub when the 10-piece Bogus Pomp Electric Band – sans the additional 15-piece chamber ensemble that comprises the Bogus Pomp Orchestra – comes to the stage with different rock sets each night.

Those who attend are likely to hear these Zappa classics such as “Zoot Alures,” “The Grand Wazoo,” “Dupree’s Paradise” and “Sinister Footwear.” Led by Jerry Outlaw, these shows will also feature actor, national touring standup comic and vocalist Ward Smith who, just a few weeks ago, brought the house down here at the Side Door.

Bogus Pomp is known for their improvisational performances and now with Smith’s inclusion in these shows, get ready for even more fun, more random crazy and if you can believe it, even more general buffoonery.

Opening reception
ST. PETERSBURG – “The Messengers: Contemporary Abstract Portraiture,” by Kristin Beauvois, will run July 31 through Aug. 22, at The Studio@620, 620 First Ave. S., St. Petersburg.

An opening reception will be presented Friday, July 31, 6 to 9 p.m. Cost is $50 a person. Visit The Studio@620 online at or call 895-6620 for information and gallery hours by appointment.

“Preoccupied with the elusiveness of identity, my intentions are to create a body of portraiture that depicts moments of vulnerability that are then fictionalized by a mix of memory and imagination,” said Kristin Beauvois in a press release. “Because the mind and its memories are capricious in nature they distort what my eyes see as truth and the paintings become something between the actual experience and my recollection of it.”

The artist will also lead an ink and watercolor workshop on Saturday, Aug. 8, 6 to 9 p.m. Participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at creating experimental abstract portraits. Beauvois will talk about her art and creative process at the closing reception on Friday, Aug. 28, 6 p.m.
