Shut Up and Laugh
Shut Up and Laugh, featuring Mike Epps, Jo Koy and Michael Che; Friday, Aug. 22, 8 p.m., at The Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S., St. Petersburg. Tickets start at $49.50. Call 893-7832 or visit www.themahaffey.com.

Mike Epps has generated an extraordinary amount of buzz among his peers and within the entertainment industry for being one of the funniest comic actors to emerge into the Hollywood scene. With a career that expands from stand-up comedy to TV and film, Epps’ current success is hard earned and well deserved. Movie credits include

“Jumping the Broom,” “Sparkle,” “Next Friday,” “All About the Benjamins,” “Friday After Next,” and “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins.” Known for his quick wit and ability to blend hip hop audiences with comedy, Epps hosted both the 2009 and 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards to rave reviews.

In 2010, he also starred in a standup special Mike Epps: Under-rated and Never Faded on Comedy Central and Showtime, and released his first comedy rap album called “Funny Bidness: Da Album.” The album features Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, and Slim Thug to name a few. That year also marked the release of his comedy DVD “Funny Bidness.”

From filling sold-out clubs across the nation to being seen weekly as a regular guest on “Chelsea Lately,” Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest start performing at a Las Vegas coffee house. His infectious, explosive energy onstage, insightful jokes and family inspired humor cross all boundaries.

In 2007, Variety magazine named Jo Koy one of the “10 Comics to Watch.” Koy has appeared on various VH1 I Love series, as well as “The Joy Behar Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Last Call with Carson Daly,” and “Jamie Foxx: Laughapalooza.” He is a regular headlining comedian at the world famous Improv, tours the college circuit nationwide, and performs in comedy clubs both in the U.S. and internationally.

Critics and audiences agree, NY-based writer and standup comedian Michael Che is a star on the rise. Having recently been named one of Rolling Stone’s “50 Funniest People,” Buzzfeed's "50 Hottest Men in Comedy," and Variety’s “Top 10 Comics To Watch,” he is quickly leaving his mark on the media landscape. In February of 2014, Che became the first-ever standup comedian to perform on NBC's “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” This marks his second late night appearance following his 2012 late night television debut on CBS's “Late Show with David Letterman.”

Che also recently taped a half-hour standup special for Comedy Central that is scheduled to air this summer. In addition to his work in front of the camera and on stage, Che is currently a writer for NBC’s iconic sketch television program, Saturday Night Live.

Tori Amos
Tori Amos, Friday, Aug. 22, 8 p.m., at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 McMullen Booth Road, Clearwater. Tickets start at $43.25. Call 791-7400 or visit www.rutheckerdhall.com.

Amos is on tour in support of her brand new studio album release, “Unrepentant Geraldines.” The album is pop/rock in both content and feel and is a change in pace from Amos’ most recent releases.

The album is both one step further in the evolution of one of the most successful and influential artists of her generation and a return to the inspiring and personal music that Amos is known for all around the world.

“Unrepentant Geraldines” is her 14th studio recording and a return to her core identity as a creator of contemporary songs, following a series of more classically-inspired and innovative musical projects of the last four years.

These have included the seasonal collection “Midwinter Graces,” the classically influenced “Night of Hunters” and “Gold Dust,” a collection of orchestral re-workings of songs from across her career. Released in October 2012, “Gold Dust” included “Flavor,” which was remixed by the late DJ Peter Rauhofer and peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Club Dance Chart in February 2013.
