'Social Security'
CLEARWATER – “Social Security,” the hit Broadway comedy by Andrew Bergman, will be presented Thursday, Sept. 11 through Sunday, Nov. 2, at Early Bird Dinner Theatre, 200 S. McMullen Booth Road.

The play focuses on Barbara and David Kahn, two married art dealers whose domestic tranquility is shattered when the Barbara’s mother, Sophie, is deposited on her doorstep by her nerd of a sister and her uptight CPA husband. The Kahns introduce Sophie to aging minimalist artist Maurice and sparks begin to fly.

'The Prisoner of Second Avenue'
CLEARWATER – West Coast Players will present Neil Simon’s “The Prisoner of Second Avenue” from Oct. 3 through 12, at the West Coast Players Theatre, 21905 U.S. 19 N.

Neil Simon’s 1971 comedy about a middle-aged couple trying to cope with corporate downsizing, financial woes, noisy neighbors and a crime-ridden city in many ways strikes a resounding parallel with the current economic climate.

'Vagina Monologues'
ST. PETERSBURG – American Stage Theatre Company will kick off its new After Hours Series with a production of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues,” running Tuesday, Sept. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 12, at 211 Third St. S.
Performances will be Wednesday through Saturday, 10:30 p.m. Matinees are Tuesday and Sunday, 7 p.m. Tickets are “pay-what-you-can,” and part of the proceeds will benefit the local YWCA.

'Visiting Mr. Green'
CLEARWATER - Francis Wilson Playhouse presents "Visiting Mr. Green," Oct. 2–12.
The Broadway drama with humor by Jeff Baron is about a Jewish widower who clashes with a rebellious young yuppie. Performances are scheduled Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. with matinees at 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Largo Fire Rescue open house and Chili Cook-off
LARGO - Largo Fire Rescue is hosting an open house and ninth annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 11, 4 to 7 p.m., at Rescue station 41, 180 Fourth St. Southwest in downtown Largo.
Family-friendly activities scheduled throughout the event include fire engine rides, Jaws of Life demonstrations, fire station tours, presentation by Largo Smuppets, K-9 demos and more.
The evening's featured entertainment is the ninth annual Chili Cook-off, with teams from the city of Largo competing for the title of “Best Tasting Chili”. Come sample them all. Donations are gratefully accepted, and all proceeds benefit the Children's Burn Foundation of Florida.

Necronomicon
ST. PETERSBURG – The Stone Hill Science Fiction Association will host Necronomicon 2008, Florida’s science fiction, fantasy and horror convention, Oct. 10 through 12 at the Hilton Bayfront, 333 First St. N.E.
This year’s guests of honor will include speculative fiction writers Frederik Pohl, Julie E. Czerneda and Rick Wilber. The convention will feature informative panels and a full schedule of events and programs including the annual Ygor Party, ongoing video and anime rooms, a masquerade, costume contest, trivia contests and an art auction.
A three-day membership costs $30 through Oct. 1, $50 after that date and at the door. Cost for Friday or Saturday only is $25. Cost for Sunday only is $20.
Proceeds from the convention will benefit a charity organization. In the past, Stone Hill has raised funds for organizations such as the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary, Wildlife Rescue, Francis House and Kids and Canines.

Statesmen of Jazz
ST. PETERSBURG – On Saturday, Oct. 11, 8 p.m., a concert by the Statesmen of Jazz will serve as a grand reopening celebration and will kick off the 10th anniversary season at the Palladium at St. Petersburg College, 253 Fifth Ave. N.

Treasure Island October Beach Fest
TREASURE ISLAND - Treasure Island October Beach Fest is Saturday, Oct. 11, 3 to 11 p.m., at Sloppy Joe's, 10650 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island.
Hosted by the Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce and Sloppy Joe’s Restaurant, the goal of the event is to raise awareness about Florida’s endangered sea turtles and the more than 20-percent of Florida residents who live with disabilities.
The event will also include a special visit from Tony Ryals, a well-known marine life artist from Jacksonville. To raise awareness for the organizations, he will attend the event and paint live masterpieces. Ryals has Arthrogryposis, a rare congenital disorder that causes the joints in his arms and legs to lock up. As a result, he paints the only way he can, by holding the brush in his mouth.
Admission is free. The Treasure Island Chamber of Commerce is selling food and drink VIP tickets for $25.
