The Florida Department of Health in Pinellas County will offer dental exams and X-rays at no cost to children and teens younger than 18 as part of Give Kids a Smile Day on Monday, Feb. 17.
Pinellas County schools will be closed that day for teacher professional development.
The services at no cost will be provided at two DOH-Pinellas centers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The centers participating are the St. Petersburg health department at 205 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N., St. Petersburg; and the Mid-County health department at 8751 Ulmerton Road, Largo.
At the St. Petersburg center, a volunteer from the Pinellas County Dental Association will join DOH-Pinellas dental staff. At Mid-County, an Upper Pinellas County Dental Association volunteer will provide services with the DOH-Pinellas staff.
No preregistration is required, but parents or guardians accompanying the minor will be asked to fill out a simple form to verify that the family’s income is less than 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. For a family of four, the annual income limit would be $47,100. Children and teens that need additional dental services will receive an appointment for follow-up work at no cost.
Children and teens whose families meet the income requirement will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis on Feb. 17. DOH-Pinellas reserves the right to cap the number of clients seen if all families waiting cannot receive services by the end of the event’s close at 5 p.m.
