TARPON SPRINGS – Dr. Parveen Vahora recently performed the first single-site hysterectomy at Florida Hospital North Pinellas in Tarpon Springs.
The single-site surgery performed by Vahora is a significant advancement in the field of minimally invasive robotic hysterectomies. Unlike other hysterectomies, which can require several incisions, the single-site surgery is done through one incision in a women’s navel, leaving minimal scarring.
“Our first priority is to provide quality care to our patients” said Vahora. “Single-site gynecologic surgery is a huge advancement in this kind of care because of its potential to minimize recovery time and scarring.”
Robotic surgeries such as the one performed by Vahora enhance the doctor’s control and dexterity. The multi-incision robotic procedures and the new single-site surgeries are minimally invasive and reduce patient recovery time.
A patient having a single-site hysterectomy will go home from the hospital within a day of the surgery and be back to a normal routine in two weeks, compared with a three-day hospital stay and a six-week recovery period for a traditional hysterectomy. Vahora and other robotics surgeons use the da Vinci Surgical System, which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved for minimally invasive surgeries in 2000.
