Suntan’s portraits are a reflection
Article published on Thursday, March 2, 2006
TREASURE ISLAND – “Portraits In The Sand: A Walk Along The Beach,” Suntan Art Center’s annual members award show will run from Tuesday, March 7 to Thursday, March 30. A “beach party” honoring the winners will be on Wednesday, March 8, 5 to 8 p.m. and will feature live music by Joe First.

Joe First, Suntan’s in-house musician said, “I once heard a Native American writer speaking to young people in a writing workshop and mentioning how he had grown up not knowing his natural mother. He described how he would go down to the beach at Pass-A-Grille and draw pictures and write poetry in the sand and then step back to watch the mother he had adopted, Mother Nature, come up from the sea and take these poems and drawings off with her to enjoy.

“Years later, while living by the Grille and writing music, those words seemed to affect my perception of what I was doing and the album of ‘Portraits In The Sand’ was born.”

Artists are invited to enter works and compete for five monetary prizes. Works will be accepted Friday, March 3, and Saturday, March 4, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Suntan Art Center is at 139 107th Ave. Call 367-3818. Hours are 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.
