A graduate of Philadelphia College of Art, Herb Snitzer moved to New York City in 1957 where he quickly established himself as one of the top young photojournalists. His work has graced the pages of LIFE, LOOK, The Saturday Evening Post, Fortune, TIME, The New York Times and Herald Tribune, as well as dozens of album covers.

As photography and associate editor of the leading jazz magazine Metronome, Snitzer photographed many of the great jazz musicians of that era Ė Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Count Basie, and more. His work is part of numerous private collections and displayed in several museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Tampa Museum of Art, Boston Museum of African American History, Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Modern Art.

Snitzer's photographic, social and political interests cover a wide spectrum of issues, which find their way into his visual work. A civil rights activist, Snitzer received a lifetime achievement award in 2009 from the St. Petersburg branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). That same year, he received a Social Justice Pioneer Award from The Studio@620.
