ST. PETERSBURG - A new art exhibit, called Native Visions remains on display through June 20 at Weedon Island Preserve in St. Petersburg.
Brenda Hofreiter is the plein air artist whose work is on exhibit. “Plein air” is French and translates roughly into “open air” that describes painting inspired by nature and done on location instead of inside a studio.
“As a generational Floridian, I am intimately connected to the landscapes of the South,” said Hofreiter. “I find myself drawn to the vanishing wilderness and nature preserves like Weedon Island for their peace, inspiration and beauty. An understanding and intimate connection to the land is created in me by this process of direct observation.”
Hofreiter’s paintings have won awards in local, regional and juried shows and are included in private and corporate collections.
Hofreiter added, “By painting what I see and feel, I share with the viewer this intimacy and sense of place. It is my hope that my paintings also inspire a desire to preserve and protect the natural world.”
The artist specializes in landscape painting in oils.
The Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center, at 1800 Weedon Drive N.E. in St. Petersburg, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
