GULFPORT - Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host a reception to highlight the work of Gulfport artist John Shevlin during its next “Meet the Artists” event on Saturday, June 21, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. at 3129 Beach Blvd. S.
The featured artist is well-known to many in the Tampa Bay area for his prolific output of colorful Tropical Funk paintings. He has displayed and sold work at Domain for several years. Shevlin will be on hand to discuss his work and answer questions. Live entertainment by jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will also be featured during the evening, and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered.
Gulfport artist John Shevlin Jr. has dubbed his signature style Tropical Funk, with its bold colors, strong graphics and a simplistic or tribal style with subject matter inspired by Florida and South Beach scenes. A sense of humor is a strong element in much of his work, including funky fish, flamingos, crustaceans and penguin snowbirds complete with sunglasses.
Palms and hibiscus blossoms are frequent subjects of his pop art stylings. His fondness for martinis shows up in many humorous small paintings. He uses acrylics, often mixed with metallics, creating a unique texture and feel. In addition to his traditional paintings, Shevlin now offers some new works that are treated and suitable for display in outdoor settings.
His work has been collected internationally, and has recently been adopted by a Caribbean resort for décor in guest rooms, as well as the offices and public areas of a corporate headquarters. He won an award for oil and acrylic paintings at the 2011 Space Coast Art Show. Shevlin paintings have become a ubiquitous feature in hundreds of local homes.
Established in March 2001, Domain Home Accessories offers a large variety of unique art, décor, lighting, jewelry, cards, home goods and more, and has earned a reputation as one of Gulfport’s most respected retailers. “& Gallery” opened in 2012 in the adjacent space and showcases the work of over 40 local and regional artists.
Meet the Artists events at & Gallery occur during Gulfport’s popular Third Saturday Art Walk. Artists and artisans line the sidewalks of scenic Beach Boulevard on Art Walk evenings. Independent shops and boutiques, live glassblowing at the Industrial Arts Center, live music venues, street performers, and Gulfport’s many popular restaurants are all part of the lively Art Walk scene. Parking in the waterfront village is free and convenient. Free trolleys are available for visitors parking in remote sites for transportation to and from the hub of Art Walk.
