GULFPORT - Domain Home Accessories & Gallery will host a reception to highlight the newly arrived work of ceramic artist Peggy Wollins. This installment of Domain’s monthly Third Saturday gallery openings will take place on Saturday, July 19, 6 until 10 p.m. at 3129 Beach Blvd. S.

Wollins’ wall-mounted ceramic fish are a whimsical new addition to the Gallery. Live entertainment by jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will also be featured during the evening, and complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvre will be offered.

Peggy Wollins creates fish, or more specifically, fish heads. From her Maymeep Studio in Centreville, Virginia, she depicts imaginary, one-of-a-kind marine life from clay.

According to Wollins, “As a lifelong art junkie, doodler and animal lover my subject matter makes sense. I worked in the art gallery industry for ten years, stopping when I had kids. I started taking a pottery wheel class, and was quickly smitten.”

Her pieces are wheel-thrown, then altered and augmented using found objects. She uses a variety of ceramic firing methods and also some post fired finishes, including hand applied gold, silver and copper leaf. Old typewriters, sewing machines, stereo components and other simple machinery yield a treasure trove of small components for the final quirky twist in each art work.

“& Gallery” will display and offer a selection of new, all-original pieces by Wollins.

“Meet the Artists” events at “& Gallery” occur during Gulfport’s popular Third Saturday Art Walk. Artists and artisans line the sidewalks of scenic Beach Boulevard on Art Walk evenings. Independent shops and boutiques, live glassblowing at the Industrial Arts Center, live music venues, street performers, and Gulfport’s many popular restaurants are all part of the lively Art Walk scene. Parking in the waterfront village is free and convenient. Free trolleys are available for visitors parking in remote sites for transportation to and from the hub of Art Walk.
