ST. PETERSBURG – “Natural Beauties,” an exhibit of soft-focus floral photography by Richard Stewart will open on Saturday, Sept. 10, 5:30 to 9 p.m., at Artists Gallery Royale.
The South Tampa resident has traveled extensively, working as a journalist and photographer for more than 30 years. His photography has appeared in newspapers, magazines and books.
Stewart uses computer tools, software filters and digital techniques to work with his images in much the same way he once worked in a conventional darkroom “only with a much greater range of creative options,” he said in announcement about his work.

“I try to create painterly, impressionistic effects to enhance the photographs, softening the lines, muting the colors and altering light values to give the images the look and feel of watercolor paintings while maintaining the realistic quality of the photographs,” he said.
Stewart is a founding member of the Artists Gallery Royale and a board member of the St. Petersburg Artists Cooperative, which owns and operates the gallery.
The exhibit will continue until Friday, Oct. 7.
Works of nearly 50 other member artists, including painting, photography, sculpture, glassworks and other art forms, also are on exhibit at the gallery.
The gallery is in the Palais Royale Building at 200 Second Ave. N., a half-block west of BayWalk.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
