DUNEDIN – “100 Years of Pinellas County Railroad History” is the first-ever exhibit that focuses on Pinellas County's railroad system.
Dunedin Historical Museum’s journey through Pinellas County history begins in October and chugs along until the end of August.
Many local museums have given accounts of the railroads within their communities, but the Dunedin Historical Museum will be the first to provide a complete chronological history of the railroad in the entire county, a museum press release said.
The main gallery of the museum will include rare photographs, uniforms of railroad employees such as engineers and conductors and station agents.
A list of items of interest to historians, railroad buffs, school children and visitors is nearly as long as the 125 miles of track laid in Pinellas County – timetables, menus, souvenirs, posters and the cultural and ethnic history of the railroads, as well as its vital importance to the military will be presented
A special section of the exhibit will be dedicated to Dunedin’s railroad history.
Visitors also can try computer simulated railroad engines and learn how to run a steam or diesel powered train. They can hear oral histories of former railroad employees and passengers. Visitors also will be able to try on railroad uniforms and handle tools that were used to keep the railroads running smoothly.
The Museum is located at 349 Main St. It is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $2 for adults, and children under 12 years of age are free.
