GRAYTON BEACH – Patricia “Sister” Barnes, founder of Sister Schubert’s Homemade Rolls and author of Sister Schubert’s Secret Bread Recipes, announced the release of her second cookbook, Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.
In the glossy 180-page coffee-table cookbook, Barnes reveals some of her most treasured and tempting recipes for every day meals and special occasions.
She intertwines her recipes with charming anecdotes and her personal narrative of how she, as a single mother of two, began a home-based business that grew to become the thriving company it is today.
Rich photography, clean design and inspirational stories of her entrepreneurship fill the pages with three interwoven themes: success, cooking and living.
“I have been dreaming of creating this cookbook for a long time,” said Barnes. “Readers will not only find some of my favorite, prized family recipes, but they will also learn my story while gaining insight and inspiration for becoming successes in their own kitchens, families or businesses.”
Barnes’ humble beginnings date back to 1989 when she was baking her grandmother’s heirloom “Everlasting Rolls” recipe in her home kitchen for her friends, family and church. Word spread quickly after people tasted these rolls, and demand increased exponentially.
In 1992, Barnes (Patricia Schubert at the time) started Sister Schubert’s Homemade Rolls and never looked back.
In 2000, the Barneses sold stock in the company to Lancaster Colony Corporation, a specialty foods company in Columbus, Ohio, which catapulted the rolls to national-brand status.
Today, Sister Schubert’s Homemade Rolls is a subsidiary of T. Marzetti Company, a division of Lancaster Colony.
The Barneses remain intricately involved in the business, with Patricia Barnes as founder and vice president of product development and manufacturing, and George Barnes as vice president of operations.
Barnes enlisted Grayton Beach, Florida-based company Cornerstone Marketing & Advertising, Inc. (CMA) to copublish the cookbook and handle its design, marketing and production. CMA created a video of Barnes to promote the cookbook, available on the new web site designed for her book, www.castyourbreaduponthewaters.com.
Barnes first encountered Lisa Burwell, president of CMA, in 2007. Burwell was donating her time to coordinate the second annual Change the World Fundraiser founded by Gina Shiflett, owner of Salon Twist.
The Barnes Family Foundation, created in 2001 by Barnes and her husband George, was the beneficiary of that event held around the new Caliza Pool at Alys Beach. Monies raised through the Change the World Fundraiser went specifically to establish Sasha’s Home, an orphanage in Gorlovka, Ukraine.
Sasha’s Home will be the primary beneficiary of net proceeds from Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters.
An alternative to overcrowded state institutions, Sasha's Home provides a warm and loving temporary home for 40 abandoned children while they await adoption by their “forever families.”
In the Ukraine, “Sasha” is an affectionate nickname for children named Alexander or Alexandra. Barnes chose this name for the home in honor of her adopted Ukrainian-born son, Alexsey. In 2008, the Mayor of Gorlovka awarded Barnes the Silver Gorlov Medal for her work with the city’s orphans. The award, named after Gorlovka’s founder, is reserved for those who contribute something special to the life of the city. With the aid of proceeds from this new book, her work will continue to help the abandoned children of Gorlovka.
Expected release of Cast Your Bread Upon the Waters is in mid-September 2009. Pre-orders taken through www.castyourbreaduponthewaters.com are available at a reduced price and will be personally autographed by Barnes.
Barnes has been invited to speak at the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation Fall Women’s Art Guild luncheon on Oct. 1, 2009 at the Embassy Suites in Miramar Beach, Fla. She will be telling her fascinating story, sharing business tips and autographing her new cookbook.
