Article published on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007
TAMPA BAY – The Florida Orchestra features Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg with her half classical artist, half rock star stage presence performing Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous Violin Concerto in performances at three popular Tampa Bay venues on Jan. 19, 20 and 21, with Stefan Sanderling conducting. Tickets are $17, $24, $36, $44, $52.

The trio of concerts begins in Tampa at Carol Morsani Hall in the Tampa Bay Performing Art Center on Jan. 19, 8 p.m. Next stop is St. Petersburg and the Mahaffey Theater on Jan. 20, 8 p.m. The final show is in Clearwater on Jan. 21, 8 p.m., in the Richard Richard B. Baumgardner Center of Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Renowned for her electrifying performances and passionate interpretations, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is celebrated worldwide as one of the most original and fearless artists on the concert stage today.

Born in Rome, Salerno-Sonnenberg emigrated to the United States at the age of eight to study at The Curtis Institute of Music. She later studied at The Juilliard School. Her professional career began in 1981 when she won the Walter W. Naumburg International Violin Competition. In 1983, she was recognized with an Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 1988, she was Ovation's Debut Recording Artist of the Year. Salerno-Sonnenberg was honored with the prestigious Avery Fisher Prize in 1999. In May of that same year, Salerno-Sonnenberg was awarded an honorary Masters of Musical Arts from New Mexico State University. Her orchestral appearances include the Vancouver Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. She has performed at such music festivals as Ravinia, Aspen, and the Eastern Music Festival.

As an engaging communicator, Salerno-Sonnenberg has been featured on a variety of television programs, including the The Tonight Show, A&E's Artist of the Week with Elliot Forrest, and 60 Minutes, and as the subject of a 2000 Academy Award nominated documentary film on her life, Speaking In Strings. Considered a groundbreaker in the recording field, she has her own record label, NSS MUSIC. In addition, two books featuring Salerno-Sonnenberg have been published: Nadja: On My Way, an autobiography written for children, and The Virtuoso, a book on celebrities.
