TARPON SPRINGS - Former Tarpon Springs High School band member John William Banther returns to his hometown after studying and performing around the world as part of the Amsterdam Brass Quintet.
The quintet performs Saturday, Jan. 26, 7:30 p.m., at Tarpon Springs Performing Arts Center, 324 Pine St. Reserve seating tickets are $24 and $20 for members and students.
The young members Amsterdam Brass Quintet have been exciting audiences and critics around the world with their exceptional programs and wide ranging repertoire from Bach to the Beatles.
Members of premiere Dutch-American ensemble, all former students of the Amsterdam Conservatory, have performed as soloists and with orchestras throughout Europe, the United States, South Africa, Oman, Curaçao and China.
The Amsterdam Brass Quintet released a self-titled album in 2006, won the Public Favorite Prize at the OnWings! competition in 2009. Members include Thomas Piet, trumpet; Thomas Geerts, trumpet; Misha Sporck, horn; Rolf Hoogenberg, trombone; and John Banther, tuba.
Hometown boy returns
Banther is a graduate of the Tarpon Springs High School Leadership Conservatory for the Arts.
He has been a member of the Amsterdam Brass Quintet since 2010, and has made solo appearances in London, throughout the Netherlands, and Italy as a prizewinner at the International Tuba Competition in Aosta, Italy in 2010.
Banther has performed throughout the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany, the U.K., and the United States with ensembles like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Radio Chamber Philharmonic of the Netherlands, Ebony Band, Holland Symfonia, the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Brass, the Florida Orchestra, Brevard Symphony Orchestra, and the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass among others.
Banther received his Bachelors at the New England Conservatory in Boston, his Masters at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and is the founder of The Story Behind The Music.
