Dave Koz performs in concert June 7 at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
CLEARWATER - Eight-time Grammy nominee and saxophonist extraordinaire Dave Koz typically spends every summer on the road, bringing a stellar group of musician friends along with him.
This summer he’s assembled an all-star line-up of saxophonists: Mindi Abair, Gerald Albright and Richard Elliot will be the special guests on the Dave Koz and Friends Summer Horns Tour 2013, a celebration of the instrument that has fueled some of the world’s best-loved songs.
The run will kick off at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater on Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m.
The saxophonists, who are touring together as a foursome for the first time, will be previewing songs from their upcoming album, entitled Summer Horns. The collection is a tribute to the great horn section bands in modern music (Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago, Tower Of Power, Blood, Sweat & Tears, James Brown, Sly & The Family Stone) and full of imaginative retakes on true horn-era classics. They will also be playing the biggest hits from their individual catalogues, with support from Dave’s band.
Dave Koz recently released his first live CD, the Grammy-nominated Live at the Blue Note Tokyo. The New York Times noted in a live review: “He’s a musician of unflappable rhythmic aplomb, which he happily squares against the airtight funk of his band.”
Mindi Abair was featured saxophonist on the 2011 and 2012 seasons of American Idol and joined Aerosmith on their 2012 Summer Tour.
Gerald Albright is known for his acclaimed solo recordings and performances with Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, and The Temptations.
Richard Elliot is a former member of Tower of Power who has since forged a successful solo career.
