YBOR CITY – An eclectic selection of acts will help WMNF 88.5 listeners celebrate the station’s 28th birthday on Saturday, Sept. 15, 7 p.m., at The Cuban Club, 2010 Avenida Republica de Cuba.
The Birthday Bash will feature three stages of music showcasing 15 different bands. There will be a dance contest and free birthday cake. Cheryl Mogul’s collection of more than 100 WMNF T-shirts will be on display in the ballroom. The event also will introduce The Complaint Choir phenomenon – a community art project that invites people to sing about their complaints in a choir together with fellow complainers – to the Tampa Bay area.
The top draw at the Birthday Bash, though, is the variety of alternative bands scheduled to provide the evening’s soundtrack. The concert lineup will include:
On the patio
Al “Coffee” McDaniel, 6 to 6:55 p.m., blues and R&B. McDaniel, a smooth baritone vocalist and guitarist, has released several CDs under the independent label, CPA Records. While preserving the spirit of the original artists, the entertainer puts a personal touch on each song he covers, customizing them. His performances embrace pop, blues, jazz and R&B standards, as well as originals.
Grupo Fantasma, 7:15 TO 8:30 p.m., Latin dance. Hailing from Texas, this 11-man Latin music band’s first eponymous album in 2001 earned them spots on internationally distributed compilations as well as the soundtrack to the critically acclaimed film “Casa de los Babys.” Their follow-up, 2004’s “Movimiento Popular,” also received rave reviews.
Kim Richey and her Band, 8:50 to 10 p.m., folk-pop. Richey, who penned huge hits for Trisha Yearwood and Radney Foster, has six albums to her credit including her 2007 release “Chinese Boxes.” In July, she performed at Live Earth in Washington, D.C.
Complaints Choir, 10:20 to 10:30 p.m.
Bogus Pomp, 10:35 to 11:40 p.m., Zappa. Tampa Bay’s own 10-piece ensemble band has performed the music of Frank Zappa since 1994.
Soul 2 Earth, Midnight to 1 a.m., gospel funk and R&B. Winter Haven’s Soul2Earth plays gospel infused soul and funk.
In the cantina
The Hodaddys, 6:45 to 7:45 p.m., surf rock.
The Zydepunks, 8:05 to 9:10 p.m., Celtic-zydeco-punk. New Orleans underground heroes The Zydepunks have successfully intermingled a wide range of musical styles to create their own unique genre of music. Performing Louisiana and European folk music, the band incorporates Yiddish riddles, Irish ballads, Cajun punk and original songs in Spanish and German. At live performances, audiences can expect frenzied folk-punk dances fronted by accordion and fiddle and backed by relentless drums and bass. Their 2007 album, Exile Waltz, is reviewed here (add hyperlink to review).
Venus in Furs, 9:30 to 10 p.m., female tribute to the Velvet Underground. Local music-scene veterans Karen Collins, Laura Taylor, and Rebekah Pulley and her Reluctant Prophets drummer Sandi Grecco debuted this Velvet Underground cover band in June. The women put a new spin on the avante-garde rock classics.
Rebekah Pulley and The Reluctant Prophets, 10:25 to 11:25 p.m., folk rock. From 2001’s acoustic recording “A Brand New Day,” to the 2004 follow-up “Here In The Real” and finally to 2006’s “Songs of Southern Zen from Pen and Paper to the Electric Den,” Pulley and her cohorts are known to deliver gritty hooks, jazz inflected vocals and entrancing harmonies. Pulley’s haunting vocals seem as beguiling in clubs as in the intimate setting of artsy coffee houses.
Fall on Purpose, 11:45 to end, experimental indie jam band.
In the ballroom
Lounge Cat, 7 to 8:15 p.m., lounge and jazz. This six-piece combo will perform old school blues, jazz, swing and ska as well as Motown and Latin numbers.
Rocket 88, 8:35 to 10 p.m., rockabilly.
Magadog, 10:30 to 11:30 p.m., ska. Veterans of three Tropical Heatwave shows, this third-wave ska group from Tampa has reformed to celebrate WMNF’s birthday.
Paul Wilborn and the Poptarts, 11:50 to 12:50 a.m., cabaret jazz and pop.
