EMIT begins 12th season with Jazz pianist Matthew Shipp

ST. PETERSBURG - EMIT begins it 12th season of adventurous programming with a solo piano concert by New York jazz artist Matthew Shipp on Saturday, Oct. 7, 8 p.m. at the St. Petersburg College Music Center. Cost is $10.
Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund for St. Petersburg College music studients.
Producer, composer, sideman, and soloist Shipp arrived in New York City 20 years ago, and in the interim has become arguably the most important player on the downtown modern jazz scene.
Shipp has distinguished himself as the Artistic Director of the Thirsty Ear Blue Series. He has also performed and recorded with David Ware, DJ Spooky and Henry Rollins. Matthew has been featured on the covers of Jazziz, Now, Signal To Noise and The Wire magazines.
According to an article at VH1.com, Shipp began playing piano at age 5 and chose jazz as his favorite genre by age 12. He was born in 1960 and grew up listening to jazz recordings from the 1950s. He moved to New York City in 1984 and became known as a recording artist in 1987. His recordings include "Nu Bop," "Equilibrium" and "Harmony and Abyss."
