Adam Ant (born Stuart Leslie Goddard) formed Adam and the Ants in London in 1977. The band’s debut was Dirk Wears White Sox but it wasn’t until 1980’s Kings of the Wild Frontier that his popularity soared. Kings was driven by a relentless rhythmic drum beat and charming melodies and quickly became a hit in the UK, launching three Top 10 singles, including “Ant Music” and “Ant Rap.” The band’s success was bolstered by a series of visually enticing videos on the fledgling MTV featuring Adam Ant decked out in a mix of romantic, punk and flamboyant pirate fashions and leather.
Prince Charming, released in 1981, retained the same formula as Kings of the Wild Frontier and quickly became a fan favorite. The album had two number #1 singles, “Stand and Deliver” and “Prince Charming.”
On the heels of Prince Charming’s success, Ant ventured out for his own solo career. His first solo album, Friend or Foe (1982) featured the #1 single “Goody Two Shoes,” the Top 10 title track and "Desperate But Not Serious.” Strip (1983), yielded the popular title track.
After Vive Le Rock, didn’t produce any notable hits other than “Apollo 9”, the man once voted sexiest in America by the viewers of MTV, pursued a surprisingly successful career in acting. He appeared in several stage shows, TV series and movies including The Equalizer, Sledge Hammer!, Tales from the Crypt, Northern Exposure, Sunset Heat, Love Bites and Slam Dance.
In 1990, Ant made a musical comeback with the catchy hit single “Room at the Top” from Manners & Physique and in 1995 reinvented himself, yet, again as an adult alternative artist with Wonderful.
