Bluegrass festival, jazz holiday top October’s concert lineup

PINELLAS COUNTY – The music scene will heat up in October with a wide variety of concerts and several music festivals.
The third annual Bluegrass Strings and Crafty Things Festival will take place on Friday, Oct. 3, 6 to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 4, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., at Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive.
On Friday, several bluegrass, country and other bands will perform live in center field. Then, on Saturday, the craft portion of the event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature an exhibit by The Florida Highwaymen. Bands scheduled to perform include Southern Star, the Foothill Bluegrass Band and Cody Shuler and the Pine Mountain Railroad. Visit largoevents.com.
Area radio station Q105’s 35th anniversary concert will be Saturday, Oct. 11, at Coachman Park. Gates will open at 11:30 a.m. and admission is free.
Performing live at the event will be Invasion, Ron Dante of the Archies, Andy Kim, Maxine Nightingale, Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals, Grand Funk Railroad and the Village People. Visit www.tampabaysq105.com.
The MarineMax Clearwater Jazz Holiday will take run Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 16 through 19, at Coachman Park, on the waterfront in downtown Clearwater, accessible from Drew Street or via Cleveland Street (State Road 60).
Festival hours will be Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday, 4 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, 2:30 to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 to 10 p.m.
Now in its 29th year, the festival has in the past attracted such legends as Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann, Dave Brubeck and Tito Puente.
The free four-day event, administered by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation, helps raise funds for jazz education through scholarship opportunities and educational activities.
This year’s headliners include Tony Bennett on Thursday, David Sanborn on Friday, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on Saturday and Patti Austin on Sunday. Other scheduled acts include Stefon Harris and Blackout, Joe Sample, Brubeck Brothers Quartet and the Venturas. Visit www.clearwaterjazz.com.
